Proverbs 31:28

“Her children rise up and call her blessed.”

Those who knew Michelangelo said that he would go to the quarry to sit among the marble stones and gaze at the shapeless rocks in silent communication. And it wasn’t unusual for him to walk around a marble slab and talk to it as if it had ears.

On one such occasion, a man asked him, “What do you see in that rock?”

His response was as powerful as his vision, “I see King David in that stone, and I’m going to set him free.” At that moment, the priceless work of Michelangelo’s David was born.

As I contemplate Michelangelo’s ability to create a masterpiece out of stone, I think about a mother’s role in her child’s life as she shapes him for the world to see. Mothers encourage us when no one else will. Moms see the best in us and forgive the worst. They seem almost blind to our inabilities and awkwardness. And they continue to love us – proving that a mother’s love is stronger than anything this world might throw at us.

Mom, be encouraged. One day, your child will appreciate all you have invested in them.

It’s your love that nurtures a future scientist or schoolteacher. My mom wanted me to become an attorney, but when I chose something different, she was proud of me just the same.

For some of us, our moms are long gone, and time has faded many memories. But one thing is sure. We are who we are because of the love of our moms. Where would we be without our mothers?

Awaiting His return,
