Matthew 2:11
“And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”
Little is known about the wise men who came to pay homage to the newborn King. Ancient writers mention a sect of Babylonian scholars who pursued the study of philosophy, medicine, and science. Some believe Daniel instructed them from the Old Testament regarding the law, the prophets, and the coming Messiah during his Babylonian captivity. What we do know about these travelers is they were Magi from the East who came offering gifts to bestow upon One worthy of worship.
The Magi’s gifts were not typical offerings for a child. One came with the kingly gift of gold. Revelation 19:16 declares Jesus as the “KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” Another brought frankincense. In the Temple, the priests used frankincense during times of worship and sacrifice. Jesus is our “merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.” (Hebrews 2:17) His sacrifice made a way for all who believe to enjoy fellowship with God forever. But the strangest gift was myrrh, a spice used to embalm the dead. Yet when laid before the manger, we see God’s eternal plan of the cross that awaited His Son.
Gold, honoring His royalty, frankincense signifying His priestly sacrifice, and myrrh for His death. What gift will you offer your King today? Let me share some ideas: your devotion, dedication, passion, pleasure, and possessions. Add to those your family, time, energy, and life. But one gift should be first on the list—your heart.
Awaiting His Return,
