1 Peter 3:18
“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit.”
God freely provides salvation to all who will believe. Although it is free, it was not cheap, but costly. Salvation needs to be free because we could never afford it or save ourselves. Mankind needed an antitype who would come and purchase salvation for everyone who would believe in God.
The word, “antitype,” in the Greek means, “a representative, a counterpart–a type or figure.” Hosea also tells us how God uses types and symbols, like an antitype, to show us the need for someone who would come to save us from our sins (Hosea 12:10).
Christ did this very thing for us by being our representative, the spotless Lamb who took away our sins, securing salvation and restoration with our Heavenly Father. This is one of the fundamental truths of the Christian life, that Jesus Christ washed away our guilt. As 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” No longer does the Christian live with guilt or shame, but rather, he or she can live in the freedom that is found in and through Christ.
Thank you, Jesus, for willingly giving Your life on the Cross, for purchasing what I could never afford.
