Isaiah 66:1-2
“Thus says the LORD: ‘Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,’ says the LORD. ‘But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word.’”
Upon what kind of person is God looking to bestow His grace, His mercy, and His favor? It is the one who sees himself, poor of spirit. Jesus spoke of this prevailing attitude in the Sermon on the Mount. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3) This man or woman looks at themselves and sees not only their human frailty and inability, but the fact that within them and upon them dwells no good thing.
Those of a contrite spirit do not defend themselves, and if disparaged by someone articulating their faults or failures, they would most likely agree with their critic. They’re ready to follow their Savior in both action “but made Himself of no reputation and took upon Him the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:7) and in speech, “neither was guile (deceit) found in His mouth.” (1 Peter 2:22 KJV) These are the things that God desires, all of which come about by this qualifying statement, “who trembles at My word.”
Immerse your life in the Word of God, to the point that when you pull yourself away, an absolute reverential awe consumes you. This is the one upon whom God’s gaze will fall.
