Luke 2:49b“Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Jonah, having been called by God to complete a task, decided to skip town and stow away in the bowels of a ship headed in the opposite direction rather than to follow the instructions of the Lord. Thinking that he could successfully avoid the will of God, he went down below in the ship to sleep, no doubt being assisted by a gentle lapping of the sea against the hull of the vessel. But when God calls someone to a task, there is no place to hide. There is no hold or mute button to press that might gain one immunity. And make no mistake; our God is a God of persistence. Being such, He proceeded to turn that gentle voyage into a cruise from hell! The ship suddenly became tossed and nearly brought to the brink of disaster. The godless crew of unbelievers, fearing for their lives, began to lighten the ship with hopes of saving the vessel and themselves. Yet while the ship was in danger and the souls of those onboard were skirting eternity, Jonah had fallen fast asleep. He was hidden in darkness, asleep in the comfort of the ship, unaware that others were about to perish. The captain went down after him and said, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.” How timely then are the words of Jesus as He says to us that we too ought to be about our Father’s business. Whatever business we might be about, does it involve a vision to reach those around us for the Lord? Are any of us in danger of being asleep at such a critical hour of church history? Let us make sure that how we live and what we live for is honoring and glorifying to Him first before we embark on some journey of our own doing. Let’s obey Him in all that He instructs us so that we won’t be putting others at risk because of our own folly. Pastor Jack
