Mark 4:39
“Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”
Jesus was always on the move, so when He said, “Let us cross over to the other side” (Mark 4:35), the disciples set sail—and then a great windstorm arose. I wonder if the disciples anticipated smooth sailing because Jesus told them to go.
In desperation, the disciples turned to Jesus. He rebuked the wind, and its fury ceased. He commanded the sea, “Peace, be still!” and there was tranquility. At the sound of His voice, the tempest quieted, giving them infallible proof: He is LORD over ALL. “He calms the storm, so that its waves are still. Then they are glad because they are quiet; so He guides them to their desired haven.” (Psalm 107:29-30)
Storms on the Sea of Galilee were common for these experienced sailors, but the original Greek implies this was an exceptionally violent wind-tossed sea threatening their boat. Yet to voyage with Jesus is to travel in peace and safety, even amidst the fury of a storm. In His presence, we can have peace in the wildest upheaval.
Do you belong to Jesus Christ? Have you followed Him only to experience wave after wave of trouble? Are you being tossed by fear and doubt over how the storm will end? Then insert your name and circumstance into this account, as well as its eventual outcome, because the same LORD is with you today.
Dear believer, rest in Jesus’ power alone. Trust Him to take you to the other side because the wind and the waves still know His name.
Awaiting His Return,
