A SACRIFICE OF PRAISE

““Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name”“

“Eat your vegetables!” was often the command of my mother. She might as well have said, “Take a bath” or given some other deplorable edict for a ten year old. Later in the years of my own parenting I found myself echoing the same decrees with the same response from my children.

God commands us to offer up a sacrifice of praise. Take note that it is a sacrifice. It is a deliberate act that is not a feeling, but rather one of obedience. I have found power in this charge to offer up a sacrifice of praise because it takes me away from depression or unworthy feelings to the truth of His acceptance and His great love for me. No greater medicine can I take than to follow God’s command. It lifts my heart and soul above the things that darken my day and seek to hold me down. This sacrifice may remind us of eating our vegetables, but there is a life-giving strength and freedom with the offering.

May God bring us all to the place of worship that transcends our little world and brings us face-to-face with His majesty.
