1 Thessalonians 4:1

“Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God…”

I am convinced that the Christian can and should live life in a way that propels them forward. The words “abound more and more” conjure up in my mind the cartoon image of Tigger bouncing alongside Winnie the Pooh, and as it is translated from the original language, that’s pretty close to how Paul is urging us to walk-energized and full of excitement at what is to come. Paul is telling us to super-abound in the quantity and quality of our relationship with Jesus in a way that gets better and better; it’s a spiritual walk that keeps leaping onward. Dear saint, we’re never told to stop along the route or even dawdle-we are to be going somewhere!

Knowing we can get weary in our walk, Paul urges us to keep advancing with this simply stated motivation: it pleases God. That alone should be enough, but it gets even better when he later reminds us that Jesus is coming soon for His church. Our God sent His Son, Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for mankind’s sins and that same Son is coming back again for everyone who calls Him Lord and Savior. I can’t think of any better reason to abound more and more.

May you never be content to merely amble along, but instead experience a walk with Jesus that puts bounce in your step and joy in your heart at the thought of His soon return.
