 John 20:29

“Jesus said to him, ‘Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'”

This scripture reminds me that faith is a much more common, useful reality of our lives than we often think. There is perhaps nothing that we can engage in or embark upon without the exercising of faith. It is by faith that I believe when I awake in the morning that a fresh start is before me. By faith, I believe that the engine of my car will start when I turn the key. Also, it is by faith that when I return home in the evening I expect my house to still be standing. Even though we live in a world of sight and sound, it is faith that gives us hope.

If you know me, then you know that I love the Hawaiian Islands. Recently, as we were making our way there, we entered an area of thick cloud cover as a hurricane was being monitored just south of the Big Island. Yet, while in the midst of this stormy weather several facts kept us confident. First, the island of Kauai was still in the midst of the sea. Second, we were still high above the dense clouds. But how would the pilot locate the island? How would he be able to descend down through the clouds, avoid the hurricane, and land on just a strip of concrete? By faith! The captain had faith in the plane’s comprehensive instruments to guide him through the storm to the flight’s desired destination. This was a wonderful reminder to me that as we journey through this life and its storms, we can confidently put our faith in the invisible One who will lead us and guide us to our desired destination…our heavenly home.
