Song of Solomon 8:6

“Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is as strong as death, jealousy as cruel as the grave; its flames are flames of fire, a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, nor can the floods drown it. If a man would give for love all the wealth of his house, it would be utterly despised.”

Love. You can be wealthy and still not acquire it. You can be beautiful and never experience it. All of your accomplishments and efforts cannot guarantee it. Yet, the deepest need of the human heart is not elusive. But it’s also not of this world.

The moment you say ‘yes’ to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, He sets His seal of the Holy Spirit upon you. It is His pledge that He is yours and you are His – forever. And oh, what an extraordinary love it is!

God’s love is shown strongest in death. His Son went into the grave and rose again to prove it. Lovers will tattoo one another’s names on themselves to profess their devotion, but Jesus’ hands were pierced for you. “See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands” (Isaiah 49:16). The cross opened the door for you to experience burning-hot love beyond any human passion or imagination. Its fire cannot be quenched, no flood of circumstance can wash it away. (Romans 8:38-39)

Perhaps you’ve been the object of His affection for many years, but you’ve turned to other loves – you’ve left Him alone. One of the dangers of love is that it can be easily neglected. But know this – God is jealous for you.

Do you remember how you first responded to His love? It was intense. It was committed. It was passionate. You gave yourself to Him without reservation. Remember that love? The cross is where perfect Love met your deepest need. May you revisit it, ponder it deeply, revel in it, and reignite that love once again.
