Psalm 19:1

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.”

James Erwin loved to fly! And looking down upon the world from his aircraft’s lofty vantage point, that desire seemed fulfilled. Quiet and still, the earth looks unusually peaceful when you’re at forty thousand feet. But it wasn’t until Erwin was promoted to astronaut that he realized the big picture.

Two days out from Earth, his Apollo spacecraft was repositioned. At that moment, Erwin looked out the window and beheld his home—his world. In his own words, James Erwin announced, “Only God could have made those stars… the earth so perfect, a blue ball of life in the midst of a lifeless expanse.”

I had the privilege of hearing this man speak of the glorious creative works of God many years ago. He said that it was during his Apollo mission, he was won to Christ by the sheer witness of the creative powers of God Himself. The heavens and the expanding universe before us speak of an engineering design and power that is little appreciated.

One night, when our girls were young, we spent the night in the backyard under the stars. As we looked up, an impromptu prayer was offered, “Thanks, Lord, for an awesome night and for those cool stars.” Truly, “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.”

Are you a Christian, a follower of the one true God, the Creator of the universe? Then, on the next clear night, go out and look up and worship Him!

Awaiting His Return,
