Psalm 42:1

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.”

There are times when human words are inadequate to express the overwhelming greatness of the Word of God; only the Author is sufficient to convey to us its depths. If we will shut off the podcast, lay aside the devotional, and attune our hearing to the Spirit in anticipation, He will meet us. But busyness dislikes stillness. When we succumb to the demands of our busy lives, we do so to our own peril – our souls become parched for a lack of lingering in the Word, of communing with God alone.

As the deer pants, so the psalmist longs, not content until he is satisfied. This is soul work. Let us not be willing to pursue anything less.
