Proverbs 10:25

“When the whirlwind passes by, the wicked is no more, but the righteous has an everlasting foundation.”

Every year our church body embarks on reading through the Bible in the new year. Many reach this goal, some give up mid-way, and then there are those who wonder, “Is this really that big of a deal?” My short answer is, “Yes.” But please read on.

Here in California, we don’t experience destructive whirlwinds, but we are prone to earthquakes. Most buildings are constructed to withstand the inevitable shaking, but when a structure isn’t firmly attached to a strong foundation, it can be devastating. We see it when a quake hits a location where foundations were haphazardly constructed or nonexistent. This same principle is true spiritually. When all is well, we can have the luxury of thinking, “Why make the time? I’m good.” But guaranteed, one day something will rock your world. When your thoughts and actions are challenged, your foundation suddenly becomes critical. Personal Bible reading is a big deal. It lays a sturdy foundation, one truth upon another, making it crucial to remaining unmoved.

God’s Word is a sure foundation because it doesn’t buckle under pressure. Its strength is unique and indisputable. Unique because the Bible stands alone in its inerrancy. Indisputable because its detailed prophecies, historical accounts, and scientific facts have been tested and found to be infallible. Read and apply God’s truth daily and your foundation will be just like it; solid, strong, able to withstand testing. And you will be unstoppable until He calls you home.

The foundation of God’s Word never fails in stressful times. It is eternally relevant. We can believe that ancient life was somehow less complicated than it is now, but when I read my Bible, I see men and women just like us. They were faced with the same problems and temptations, and ultimately the same choices as you and I encounter. When Scripture addresses our real-life issues, Solomon’s statement, “There is nothing new under the sun” shows itself to be truer than ever. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible answers life.

Believer, quakes and storms will come, but the righteous have an age-abiding foundation. Go deep so that you can build high.
