Psalm 29:2

“Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.”

Worship often evokes images of stained-glass windows or dimly lit cathedrals, accented by candlelight, but true worship is not dependent on a setting or atmosphere. Many believe worship happens in a church service where a group of musicians performs a series of songs that may or may not be to our liking. That also is not worship. Worship and our acts thereof are intended to be costly offerings to God, in terms of songs of praise, yes, but also our very lives.

The Hebrew word shachah defines worship as lowering oneself before another or being face-down in awe. It means to offer up obeisances or reverence, to prostrate oneself before a king, ruler, monarch, or deity. Some have translated the word to mean: to depress or to emboss (stamp) yourself into the earth or into the clay. The idea is that the worshiper cannot bow any lower, so they press themselves into the dust beneath their feet in true humility before God. A powerful word picture indeed.

As we press into Jesus, we take on all beautiful, attractive, and pleasurable attributes that we find in Christ. But have you walked into a room and known another had been there because a hint of their perfume lingered in the air? So, too, when we worship Jesus, we cannot help but leave behind us the sweet aroma of His presence.

Let us determine to worship our Lord, in the beauty of holiness, and so diffuse the fragrance of His loveliness everywhere.
