Psalm 90:12
“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
What if you could know the day of your death? Would it be a good thing? The psalmist’s request, “teach us to number our days,” shows that only the Lord knows the number of days given to us in this life. It’s strange to think that today brings us one day closer to the day He has appointed us to enter eternity.
But what if we could know? If it were possible, I believe that people would cease to be as we know them today. You might live differently, too, if you knew death was right around the corner. But how would you live? The possibility of today being my last keeps me on guard, ready to refuse that which is evil or embrace that which is good. The thought that I could stand before God at any moment dramatically affects the way I live.
The same is true regarding the Rapture of the Church. The Bible teaches the Doctrine of Imminency, which means that without warning or prophetic precursor, the Lord Jesus “will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up (raptured) together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)
The thought that I could stand before God at any moment dramatically affects the way I live.
The Rapture is a day that only the Lord knows, but the imminent reality of it keeps me ready, serving, praying, witnessing, giving, and loving until I go to Him. Whether it is through death’s door or the Rapture, either way, we need to recognize that our time is limited. When seeking God in all our ways becomes the objective in everything we do, we will have gained a heart of wisdom.
Who knows, the Lord could return today. I am ready. How about you?
