John 21:15

“…Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You…”

“Do you love me?” It is safe to say that this question is asked daily by millions of people. But why would someone feel the need to ask? Perhaps the one asking needs assurance. Maybe the one being asked needs to consider if, in fact, they do love the other person. Or could it be that both parties desire more love, more acceptance?

So, when Jesus asked Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” what was the motive behind such a probing question? After all, Jesus already knew what was in Peter’s heart, so why ask at all?

By asking, Jesus was challenging Peter’s list of priorities. In a sense, Jesus wanted to know, “Where am I on the scale of your affections?” While it’s true that Jesus, being God, knew the answer, Peter didn’t. The reality was that Peter needed to evaluate what place Jesus held in his love scale.

From time to time, the Lord will likewise ask you and me, “Do you love Me?” And when He does, I know that the degree of my affection is being challenged. It is this quiet probing that causes me to pause and evaluate.

Do you love Jesus above all else? Before you quickly say yes, as Peter did, let me ask, “How do you know? What evidence can you offer in support?” And why do you love Him? My friend, only you can answer, but answer you must.

Awaiting His return,
