MATTHEW 5:13

__________________________________________________

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?
It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”

When Jesus told His followers, “You are the salt of the earth” He was making a statement of fact. It was a right here, right now kind of moment that pointed out their potential for influence.

My mom was a great cook who taught me the value of salt. It boosts the flavor of everything it’s added to, in the same way salty Christians enhance their personal world. If the flavors of wisdom and holiness, patience and agape love were consistently added to conversations and encounters, I’m positive that the changes we’d see would be unprecedented. It would be tantalizing – whetting the appetite to “taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Psalm 34:8).

Salt can also cleanse like an antiseptic. A survey of today’s headlines leaves no doubt that people suffering with the ravages of sin need the cleansing agent of truth. Now is not the time to fearfully sit on the sideline. This is our time to boldly live and speak. And no arena should be off-limits because evil has no boundaries. Like salt on a wound, truth will sting, but it can also stop spiritual decay and allow life in Christ to flourish.

Salty believers affect life in a big way, but it requires daily denial of self, picking up our cross, and following Jesus. Honestly, following Him will no doubt take us outside of our comfort zone, and that is okay. Tomorrow morning, I encourage you to start your day asking, “Lord, what is on Your agenda today?” Then, wherever He takes you, and whatever He puts in front of you, be ready to give a healthy shake of that salt.
