Deuteronomy 8:10-14

“When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you. Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

LEARN FROM HISTORY

An understanding of history and its events will teach us many invaluable lessons, one of which is every nation has its rise and fall; the United States is no exception to this protocol of God.

The great American statesman, Daniel Webster, wrote, “If we in our prosperity neglect religious instruction and authority, violate the rule of eternal justice, trifle with the injunctions of morality, then no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us as a nation and bury us in profound obscurity.”

When I ponder Webster’s words, I am reminded of the line from an old hymn,

“America, America,

God shed His grace on thee.”

God has shed His grace on this nation. Yet in self-righteous pride, America has all but evicted God from her consciousness; she drinks in her wealth and glory as though she has earned them without His help. We have fornicated with our blessings rather than maintained spiritual intercourse with our God.

 CHANGE COURSE

We know that days await us that will most certainly test our resolve and commitment to God. Israel’s own history may provide a prophetic view into our future if we do not change our current course just as Daniel Webster warned. May we turn our eyes once again – not to our almighty dollar, military prowess, or any other earthly thing – but to God alone.

I believe that God, in His holy compassion, will visit America with a fresh work of His Spirit. I pray that we recognize it when He sends it.

 Awaiting His return,
