Lamentations 3:22-23
“Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed because His compassions fail not, they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
This steadfast promise to God’s people is one that is both familiar and under-utilized. Familiar because it’s regularly quoted, but not fully used when we don’t allow it to fully penetrate our thoughts. The prophet Jeremiah’s declaration wasn’t the result of a single experience, but of his personal awareness of a lifetime of the Lord’s care. Believer, your life doesn’t consist of a one-time mercy and a single act of compassion, but multitudes! The plurality of the words mercies and compassions communicate to us that our God is not stingy in His blessings – they go on day after day. Whether we take notice of them or not, a fresh batch is waiting every morning. I know that some days unfold in a way that wasn’t what we envisioned, but we can always be assured of this unchanging fact: every day has an end point. The sun will always set, only to rise once again on a brand-new day; one that is filled with brand-new mercies earmarked by God for that particular day. For many of us, just the act of waking up in the morning reminds us of His constant care!
Once we begin to anticipate the Lord’s new mercies and compassions that are ready and available each morning, we’ll shout right along with Jeremiah, “Great is YOUR faithfulness!” The psalmist goes even further in Psalm 92 by telling us that we should declare the Lord’s lovingkindness in the morning and His faithfulness every night. Meditating on His mercy, compassion, and lovingkindness as we get out of bed will ensure a God-filled outlook on the day enabling us to give report, with gratitude, we can give report of His faithfulness when our head hits the pillow at night. What a personal God we have! What intimate care He gives!
