Hebrews 12:1

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

Run!

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1

Runners cheered on by a great crowd as they race toward the finish line – what a fantastic picture of our Christian life! But as in any race, finishing well depends on discarding everything that entangles or weighs us down.

FAMILIAR WEIGHTS

The moment we came to Christ, He began freeing us from the heaviest of sins that weighed upon us. These things no longer bog us down. But what about the weight of the sins we have grown accustomed to? Sins that we think are so minor, and therefore no big deal; these are the ones most likely to trip us up.

Laziness, a critical spirit, gossip, lustful looks, harsh words spoken in the heat of the moment, petty jealousies, and the list goes on. Sin is sin. What we justify is as grievous as the most flagrant of transgressions.

Jesus died on the cross for every sin –

there should be nothing that ranks as minor in our estimation.

A HIDDEN DANGER

The danger may well be that we have justified some sins because we think no one sees them. The reality is that the God who died is the same God who sees. Such knowledge should forever alter our opinion of sin and cause us to strip off every hindrance, hidden and otherwise, so we might run with endurance.
