Acts 12:11

“And when Peter had come to himself, he said, ‘Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel, and has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people.’”

In the twelfth chapter of the book of Acts, we read about the persecutions of the early Christians. Something had to be done about those who were making a difference for the Lord. The Roman Empire was losing its grip, not so much on the nations that they had conquered or the vast wealth that they had accumulated, but on the hearts and minds of men. Rome offered civility to some degree; it provided protection and could grant a form of regulated freedom. Yet, when the message of Jesus Christ came to Rome, it didn’t just shake the pillars of the Senate, crack the foundation of the Coliseum, or waste time and effort on what would someday dissolve – the Gospel shook the very foundation of what people had believed and the message of Jesus was setting men free!

This was unacceptable to Rome and it’s still unacceptable to Satan who wants complete control of our fleshly desires. Jesus Christ gives us the opportunity to leave behind the things that this world has to offer in exchange for a life, a kingdom and a freedom that the human heart truly longs for. Jesus is far greater, more powerful, and more certain than anything here on earth.

Listen to what Peter concluded when he realized the weakness of the Roman Empire in comparison to the Kingdom of God: “…Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent an angel, and has delivered me…” Peter was delivered from the grip of the Roman Empire and had been set free to serve the Lord again.

As you go about your way today, keep in mind that while persecution may come, the Lord will send His angels to deliver you just like He did for Peter. Dear believer, remember each and every day, that you don’t do anything where the Lord is not with you. Remember that each and every day.
