Revelation 5:9

“You are worthy…”

As Passion Week commences, we read in the Scriptures of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and of crowds praising Him saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!” only to cry out a few days later, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” Once hailed as the King, He’s now mocked and rejected as a common criminal. They could not see what lay ahead, but that’s not true of us today. We know the end of the story, we can go to Jerusalem to see the empty tomb that proclaims the risen Christ. We, unlike those in the crowd, have the joy of continually blessing our King, and perhaps we should begin this week by singing.

In the book of Revelation, chapter five, we learn of a future scene of worship taking place at the very throne of the Lord God Almighty. A new song is being sung by a countless multitude; a song of redemption that begins with the words, “Worthy are You…for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood.” If you read carefully, you’ll notice that it’s not the angels or any other heavenly being that is offering up this glorious praise, it’s only those who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb that can sing this song.

It’s been said that if we’re ever going to sing up there, we’ll have to start down here. Do you need a new song in your heart for “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”? I encourage you to remember back to the day that you acknowledged your need to have your sins washed clean by His shed blood and use that as a starting place. You may think your voice sounds like Kermit the frog, but don’t let that keep you from singing loudly and singing often for all that He’s done. The world sings for all kinds of reasons, but we can sing of Him because we know that He alone is worthy.
